What is Repairable?

What types of damage is repairable?

Is my damage too big to be repaired?

This is a very common question that is not always easily answered.  Many shops go by the mantra that if it is bigger than a quarter, it needs to be replaced.  This is a tactic that replacement focused shops use to drive more replacement business that results in unnecessary windshield replacements (or their technicians are really just trained for glass replacement and not for repair).  The real truth is that these shop do not adhere to published ANSI industry standards.  At Wyndshyld, we follow the industry standard called ROLAGS (Repair of Laminated Automotive Glass Standard)  This standard specifically outlines what is repairable and what is not.

For more information on ROLAGS and to read the standard, click here.  Below we have outlined common repairable breaks and what is repairable.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

  • Long Cracks Up to 14"
A black and white drawing of a Windshield with a long crack on the edge.

Cracks can be repaired when they are less than 14″ in length.  However, depending on its location, age, or contamination, repairing the crack may not always be recommended even when the crack is less than 14″.  In situations where the crack is on the inside layer of the glass, interferes with a camera, or is in the Drivers View, and a few other scenarios, the crack can't be repaired.

  • Surface Pits
A diagram of a surface pit , outside lite , plastic interlayer , and inside lite.

In certain circumstances, surface pits are repairable when the diameter is not less than 1/8 inch.  Because surface pits don’t penetrate the outer layer of glass, these are superficial and typically won’t spread.  In cases where the surface pit is very small, we typically would have to make it bigger for the resin to bond properly to the glass.  We usually only recommend the repair of a surface pit if it interferes with the wipers.
