In many instances, the windshield on our vehicle is the only thing that stands between us and doom. Whether it’s keeping bugs out of your teeth or alerting you of impending danger. The glass on your car is not your Daddy’s windshield. With ADAS technology, there is so much more that a windshield does for you.
In return, we like to keep our windshields scratch-free, just like the body of our car or truck. This isn’t difficult to do if you stick to these seven, easy-to-do, tips on windshield care and maintenance.
All kinds of things like dirt and dead bugs collect on our windshield. When we need to clear the way, all it takes is a spritz of windshield wiper fluid and a couple of back-and-forths of the blades and your glass is as good as new.
But, if you let the fluid run out, the blades will spread the dirt and grime all over, which may have stones. Dry debris can scratch the glass so keep that fluid topped off at all times. Your windshield will thank you for it.
Wipers can go through a beating and they also get old like everything else. If you find that your wiper blades are lacking due to chips or that they’re just too old, get them replaced. New wipers hug the glass and can remove unwanted dirt.
If you’re parked and come out to find leaves or wayward paper on your windshield, remove it with care. Don’t just push it off because these too can possess hard or rough edges or be covering something more treacherous. Carefully remove items that find their way to your windshield.
Don’t park your vehicle under a tree that you can see is bearing fruit. Also don’t park your car underneath a building that is under construction. When you park your vehicle look around and be sure it’s in a spot where nothing can fall on the windshield. If you have to park outside.
If you have the option of parking in a garage, then take it. There’s no better way to protect your vehicle than by keeping it covered when it’s not in use. We don’t mean the fabric covers, although those also help keep debris off your car. A carport canopy works well. But a garage is the best.
Don’t drive right on someone’s bumper. We understand you can be in a rush, but you won’t have as much time to stop as you would if you kept your vehicle two car lengths behind the person in front of you. If you keep on top of the person in front you’ll have more problems than a scratch in your windshield.
If you’re trying to keep scratches off the windshield of your off-roading vehicle you may be fighting an uphill battle. But if you don’t off-road then we suggest you be careful what roads you take your vehicle down. Gravel roads can be risky but also unavoidable sometimes. Just be wary of where you take that vehicle and you’ll avoid scratches.
