Signs That Your Windshield Wipers Are Worn

The last thing you want when driving in a storm is to turn on your windshield wipers, only to find they don’t clear the windshield properly. Is it time to replace your wipers? That’s a great question, and one we’re about to answer for you.

Experts recommend replacing windshield wipers every six months to a year. To save money, it’s a good idea to make replacing your wipers an annual task—perhaps every spring. But if your wipers haven’t reached the six-month mark and you still suspect they’re worn, here are some signs that indicate they may need replacing:

1. They Underperform

If your wipers leave streaks behind, it’s time to replace them. This also applies to smearing, fogging, or hazy residues. Anything your wipers leave behind that obstructs your view is a clear sign it’s time for a replacement.

2. They Make Weird Sounds

Wipers that squeak or make other strange noises should be inspected by a professional. The rubber blades may have hardened, causing them to emit sounds. This is a sign that it’s time for replacement, as hardened rubber blades can’t clear water and debris effectively.

Wipers that chatter or skip across the glass are also a sign of wear. When they jump or skid instead of gliding smoothly, it’s time to replace them.

3. You Can See the Damage

When you touch the wiper blade, is the rubber flexible or hard? If it’s hard, they need replacing. Cracks or tears are another visible sign of damage. If your blades show any signs of wear, replace them immediately.

How Do I Keep My Wipers Lasting As Long As Possible?

While experts suggest replacing your windshield wipers every six to twelve months, there are steps you can take to ensure they last throughout the year:

Keep Them Clean: Once a month, grab a microfiber cloth and one of the cleaning solutions listed below. Dampen the cloth and gently wipe the blades until you can tell they are free of debris.

  • Wiper Fluid
  • Soapy Water: Warm water with a touch of mild dish soap
  • Rubbing Alcohol
  • White Vinegar & Water: 50/50 ratio

Clean Your Windshield: Your wipers pick up dirt and debris from a dirty windshield. Use a microfiber cloth and a glass-friendly solution that doesn’t contain ammonia, as ammonia-based solutions can cause fogging or streaking.

Lift Your Wipers in Freezing Conditions: If your vehicle will be exposed to freezing temperatures or snow, lift the wipers to prevent them from freezing to the glass or getting buried under ice. This is a great way to protect the rubber blades from damage.

Use Silicone Spray: Silicone spray helps your wiper blades stay flexible. Without it, the rubber may harden more quickly.

Replace Your Blades Every Six to Twelve Months: By sticking to this rule, you’ll ensure your wipers are ready to work at full capacity when you need them most—keeping you safe in hazardous weather.
